John W. DeVore grew up in the woods of Maine, where living off the land was part of daily life. He served as a nuclear submariner after graduating from high school during the vietnam era, and later as a senior technical consultant to nuclear power stations all across the country. He and his wife have raised seven children. Lately he has, among his other interests, taken up the building of custom wooden canoes.
